Founded by Thomas Simpson, the date of Glen Garioch is officially given as being 1797. There are claims (still to be substantiated) of it producing legally at an earlier date which, if proved true, would make this Oldmeldrum plant the oldest distillery in Scotland.

Like most distilleries, it has passed through several owners over the years and has had periods of mothballing. The distillery produced heavily peated malt until 1995 before its closure. Thankfully it opened again two years later, but the peat and distillery’s own maltings had gone, with an entirely new style created.

Today it is a member of the Beam Suntory stable, with all of its production going to single malt.
